Maccaferri® GABIONS AND Maccaferri® GABIONS' MATTRESSES FROM WIRE MESH WITH HEXAGONAL STITCHES
Maccaferri® Gabions are manufactured from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches. Wire is from soft steel and is zinc coated in three variants:
- double-zinc wire covered with a quantity of Zinc of 240 - 290 g/m2 depending on the wire's diameter,      through twice Zinc bath passing of the wire according to EN 10244-2.
- wire with galfan protection (mischmetal from Zinc + 5% Aluminium)
- wire with double protection, with galfan and polymer.

I. Maccaferri® GABIONS' TYPES

Maccaferri® Gabions or Maccaferri® gabions' mattresses from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches are manufactured in a wide range of standard sizes wich permits an easy panelling of the structure and combinations for the standard sizes to obtain whatever dimension required by the work.

All Maccaferri® gabions and Maccaferri® gabions' mattresses have selvedge wires with minimum 1,4 bigger diameter than wire's diameter of the mesh. The wire has a service life between 60 and 80 years till the chemical agents pass the protective coat. The wire's diameter must have tolerances included between 0.05 and 0.07 mm depending on wire diameter.

The advantage of the selvedge wires is obvious especially at the works executed in river beds with continue erosion where Maccaferri® gabions mattresses can easily cover the section of the river bed's profile.

     

Maccaferri® Gabions from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches have inner diaphragms from metre to metre to increase the Maccaferri® gabion stiffness and to increase the elasticity of the Maccaferri® gabions structure. The dimensional tolerances for Maccaferri® gabions are 5% on each direction and for mattresses are of 3% on length and width and of ±2,5 cm on height.

Maccaferri® Gabions and mattresses are provided with lid for each size.

Wire resistance is of minimum 350 - 550 N/mm2 and the elongation of the wire must be minimum 9% from the wire's diameter for a sample of 25cm length, according to EN 10223-3.

The wire mesh with hexagonal stitches has three kinds of dimensions for the mesh stitch .

The representative size of the stitch is its width « D », which due to the hexagonal form is smaller than the height « H ». Wire must be double twisted, increasing thus the resistance as well as the elasticity of the mesh. Due to double-twisted mesh, teasing of the entire mesh is prevented in case of the local tearing of       some stitches.
For all categories of stiches' sizes (6 x 8; 8 x 10; 10 x 12cm) is accepted a tolerance of the stitch between -4% si +16% form the standard size.

The mesh with double zinc protection or with galfan is used to whatever kind of work with Maccaferri® gabions and the mesh with double protection (galfan + polymer) is used at the works placed in aggresive mediums (salt or marine waters; industrial platforms; other acid or aggressive mediums, etc.).
