Geotextiles are permeable textile materials made of polypropylene, polyethylene or polyester used at construction works in contact with soil or other materials. They can be classified after fabrication proceedings as follows: woven, non-woven (mechanical or thermaly bonded).
Geotextiles can be used with the following functions:
1.Filtration
2.Separation
3.Drainage
4.Protection
5.Reinforcement
6.Geotextile bags
1. The geotextiles with the filtration and separation role, are used:
a. between the soil and the aggregate layer at roads’ and railways’ foundations
b. between the foundation soil and the body of the dams and embankments
c. at different types of constructions: retaining walls, drainage pipes in granular layer draped in geotextile
2. The geotextiles with drainage role, are used for:
a. drainage systems for different constructions: dams, retaining walls, roads, landfills
b. drains to accelerate the consolidation
3. The geotextiles with the protection role, are used:
a. to protect the geomembranes or other materials against static and dynamic loads
4. The geotextiles with the reinforcement role, are used:
a. to realize retaining walls from reinforced soil
5. The bags made of geotextiles are used:
a. to consolidate and protect banks
b. to protect foundations under water
c. to build dams
d. at coast’s protection
